A groom and more than a dozen members of his family were injured after a wedding procession was allegedly attacked in Muzaffarnagar’s Shahpur police station area, officials said on Thursday. The incident took place on February 8 in Basikala village when the procession was returning with the bride from Khatauli.
Police said the attack was linked to old enmity between two groups belonging to the same community. The injured include the groom, Akram, and several of his relatives. A case has been registered against 20 named persons and one unidentified individual. One accused has been arrested so far.

The attackers reportedly used lathis, iron rods, and stones. Local accounts suggest that around 50 to 60 people were present during the assault. The violence, including stone-pelting and stick attacks, continued for nearly an hour.
More than 12 people from the groom’s side were injured. Irshad, Kaif, and Sanu sustained serious injuries and were admitted to hospital. The newly gifted car received during the wedding was also allegedly damaged in the attack.
Members of the victim’s family have claimed that the attack stemmed from political rivalry. They alleged that they are supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and that party flags and posters displayed at their home had led to tension with the other group.
According to the complaint, the long-standing dispute escalated on the day of the wedding, turning what was meant to be a celebratory occasion into a violent confrontation.
Muzaffarnagar SHO Gajendra Singh confirmed that one accused, identified as Irshad, has been arrested. He further said that a case has been filed against 20 people and efforts are on to nab the remaining accused.
Police said an investigation is underway and further arrests are expected.
